Saint John River Basin: A bridge was destroyed on the Aroostook River. At Presque Isle, many bridges were destroyed. On the tributaries between Woodstock and Fredericton, all bridges were taken out except those at Eel River and Sullivan's Creek. Houses were swept away, and a total of 100 buildings were destroyed on Keswick Island. Wharves and the lower stories of homes situated along the river at Indiantown were under water.
Melting of a heavy snow accumulation plus heavy rain for a week beginning March 13. There may have been some ice jams. The event has been referred to as the "Great Freshet" of 1846.
Ice began running at Grand Falls on March 25. At Presque Isle, the water level rose 20 feet in a short time. Keswick Island was under 12 feet of water.
