Affected Areas

General: Unusually high river discharges and intermittent freezing temperatures caused minor flooding, some due to small ice jams. Saint John River Basin: Low-lying farmland along the Tobique River was flooded in areas around Three Brooks and Arthurette. On the Nashwaak River, minor flooding occurred at Nashwaak Village and Penniac Island for several days. The river cleared its ice cover from Stanley to the Saint John River. Miramichi River Basin: On the main Southwest Miramichi River, ice jams formed at Doaktown and Quarryville. At Blackville, the river peaked on December 24. Some low-lying areas adjacent to the river were flooded.
Unusually rainy weather in late Autumn, followed by heavy rains on December 18 and 19, and intermittent freezing temperatures causing ice formation and jams.
The flooding, combined with freezing temperatures, damaged pasture lands that frequently flood in the spring. It was expected that spring crops would be poor as a result of the unusual conditions.
