Affected Areas

Saint John Area: Approximately 59 mm of rain fell in the Saint John area on March 12, causing a culvert under the Canadian Pacific railway line to be washed out. Ice debris also contributed to the washout after creating a blockage. The water backed up and flooded a 100-metre section of Route 7 at Westfield, between Saint John and Fredericton. The blockage was cleared by noon on March 13, and the highway was re-opened. A pulpwood truck swerved into the ditch at 03:00 hours, March 13, spilling its load, after the driver failed to notice the road detour signs. The truck sustained no serious damage, and was back on the road by the afternoon.
The 59 mm of rainfall broke the previous record of 24 mm in Saint John for March 12. The highway was flooded to a depth of approximately one metre.
