Saint John Area: Clogged sewers and drainage ditches backed up water onto streets and roads. Basement flooding was reported in several area. Areas of the City hardest hit by the flooding included the Marsh Creek area, Mystery Lake Road, the Golden Mile, Red Head Road, Golden Grove, Black River Road and the Lorneville area where one bridge was weakened. Rothesay and Thorne avenues, as well as McAllister Drive and other streets, were also affected. Some other roads, which were closed, were the Ashburn Lake Road and Foster Thurston Drive as far as Drury Cove. Business establishments and homes were flooded and two schools were forced to close. Telephone services to about 200 residences of Glen Falls were disrupted "due to cable problems" resulting from the flooding, and several homes were evacuated by work crews or firemen using watercraft. A Rothesay Avenue motel was flooded as well as several travel trailers at a trailer sales company.
At Mystery Lake Dam, 18 inches [0.46 m] of storage was built up. The Marsh Creek area, was reported as being "eight feet below sea level". In the Glen Falls area, an estimated 400 acres [162 hectares] was said to be inundated.
No accurate account of how many people had to evacuate their homes because of the flooding was available. A partial assessment of the damages to homes and roads was in the order of $500 000 to $700 000. This flood was described as "the worst ever in Saint John".
