Affected Areas

The date of the storm is estimated to be within about two days of this date based on information presented in The Union Advocate, June 24, 1874. Northeastern New Brunswick: The heavy rain caused flooding of low lying areas, possibly damaging crops that were recently planted. The storm disrupted logs held by the S.W. [Southwest Miramichi] Boom and capsized a scow loaded with bark, badly damaging it. "A raft of bark near the scow was completely doubled up, like a sheet of paper once folded, showing the force of the storm upriver." A strong gale was reported to have damaged or destroyed many ships off the coast. Fifteen fishermen from the Shippagan area were reported lost. A schooner and a brig were reported ashore on Tracadie Beach, and two boats were reported ashore on Neguac Beach. Cold, wet weather was reported in the Gaspé region, with a gale from the east. Reports indicated many boats were destroyed or damaged in that area also.
