Saint John River Basin: Flood conditions prevailed over the upper portion of the Saint John River Basin. Serious flooding occurred at Fort Kent, Maine, when the Saint John River rose more than 14 feet [4.3m]. Several families were forced to evacuate their homes and at least 15 business establishments reported flood damages. In New Brunswick, at Edmundston, the river reached a level which was 16 feet [4.9m] above normal. A nine year old boy was drowned in the flood swollen river at Iroquois. Floodwater also caused damage at Ste. Anne-de-Madawaska, Bristol and at Grand Falls where the generating station was surrounded by water. Two feet [0.6m]of water covered the power station floor with all gates open. Extensive flooding in the town of Rivière Verte resulted from overbank flow of the Green River. At Plaster Rock, Fraser's Mill was shut down due to the rising waters of the Tobique River. Highway 126 was flooded three miles [4.8km] north of Tilly. At Fredericton, the Campbell Street parking lot was flooded. Some water entered the basements of the Capital Garage, Capital Yacht Club, Beaverbrook Hotel and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Blighty's Fish and Chip stand on the Regent Street Wharf was surrounded by water. The C.N.R. subways on Queen and Union streets were closed to traffic due to flooding. In Barker's Point and Lower St. Mary's, some houses were surrounded by water and at least two families left their residences. Along the Nashwaak River, the interval lands were inundated. The TransCanada Highway from Fredericton to McGowan¿s Corner was closed to traffic and farmlands to the north of the highway were inundated. Restigouche River Basin: In Restigouche County, rivers and brooks reached flood levels.
Saint John River Basin: At Hartland, a level two feet [0.6m] below that of 1968 was reached. At Woodstock, the Mactaquac headpond peaked at 133 feet [40.5m]. The water level at the Fredericton pumphouse reached 23.8 feet [7.25m]. Restigouche River Basin: Several homeowners of the St. Albert District experienced anxious hours as Walker Brook overflowed its banks. One small bridge was carried away.
The U.S. Corps of Engineers reported damages in the order of $500 000 at Fort Kent, Maine. Additional costs included $20 for repairs to the C.N.R. line. One life was lost at Iroquois, in Madawaska County.
