Affected Areas

Newcastle Area: At Newcastle, the floodwaters were reported over the wharves. The Irving Oil Ltd. property, adjacent to Morrissey Bridge, was flooded, but no damage was reported to have resulted. Ships docked at Acadia, Burchill's and Anderson's were reported as "appearing to be drifting in the river as all wharves were covered".
Hurricane type storm, high tides and heavy rainfall.
The floodwaters were reported to be about two feet [approx. 0.6m] deep on the Newcastle waterfront.
There was little flood damage; however, the storm caused considerable damage. Approximately one-third of the Miramichi area drift net fleet was reported as being destroyed. The storm resulted in 35 fatalities in Miramichi Bay, and is often referred to as the Escuminac Disaster. At Escuminac, many boats were capsized, leaving many fishermen dead before they could reach safety.
