Upper Saint John River Basin: A newspaper article with an April 21, Edmundston byline stated: "We are having quite a spring freshet here and some damage has been done by the rise of water in the Madawaska stream. The ice in the river St. John has become jammed at St. Basile about five miles below here and the water has backed up till it is now flowing up the Madawaska River and is within a few feet of the floor of the highway bridge. Last evening the water below the dam of Murchie's mill was on a level with that above, and many feared that the stream would run across the road and through the Indian flat as it did during the freshet ten years ago. Considerable damage has been done by the water coming into cellars. Mr. Milton Dayton had a quantity of goods destroyed in the cellar of his new store, being unable to remove all before the water became too high. In Mr. Thadee Herbert's house it reached the level of the first floor. The water is now at a standstill and it is believed that it will soon fall. Murchie's mill dam has been injured, but to what extent cannot be ascertained until the water falls. Nearly all the low lying lands between here and Grand Falls are covered. At Green River the water is over the road and the railway track to the depth of several feet, and it will likely be several days now before a train will be able to get through to Edmundston as the track is washed out and destroyed. It is reported that a large number of sheep and several horned cattle have been drowned, and a great deal of damage to fences and out buildings."
