Heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Hanna caused localized flooding in the southern half of New Brunswick and coastal areas experienced high surf and high winds. Widespread reports of road washouts and flooded basements numbering in the hundreds came from the Fundy Coast. Moncton, Saint John, Sackville, Sussex, and Point Lepreau received above 50 mm of rainfall over 2 days, 6th and 7th September. Some residential and infrastructure damage was reported in the Saint John area due to localized flooding. A washout closed part of the Southern New Brunswick Railway.
Tropical Storm Hanna brought periods of intense rainfall (10-30 mm in one hour). High rainfall amounts resulted in rapid water level increases in streams and rivers and localized flash flooding. Coastal areas were affected from high winds, heavy rain and dangerous surf.
Environment Canada reported the heaviest rainfalls were 141 mm at Point Lepreau and 139 mm in Saint John. Fredericton received 54 mm of rain, Moncton 60 mm, Sussex 90 mm, Sackville 104 mm, and the Fundy Coasts more than 100 mm. In southern parts of the province, total rainfall over 2 days surpassed the 30-year average for the entire month.
Heavy rains and runoff caused road closures and flooded basements in Saint John. 299 property owners reported damages in the Black’s Harbour, Saint John, Grand Bay-Westfield and Sackville areas. Total damage cost was $16 million (Emergency Measures Organization).
