Affected Areas

Fundy Coast: At Saint John, a "Saxby" type combination of windstorm and tides caused extensive damage. The storm broke down the dykes on the Bay of Fundy everywhere, and the floodwaters covered the now deserted marshlands, damaging them. Fredericton Area: At Fort Frederick, on the Saint John River, a considerable part of the fort was washed away. Sackville Area: At Fort Cumberland on the Tantramar Marshes, 700 cords of firewood were swept off by the tide in a body from the wood yard, although situated at least ten feet higher than the tops of the dykes. The tide was six feet perpendicular above its ordinary level. The marshlands were stated to have been "incapable of bearing grain for the following three years".
