Miramichi River Basin: A freshet of the Miramichi River was reported to have swept 35 000 000 feet [82 500 m3] of logs away when booms broke. The shore opposite Newcastle was reported as being strewn with logs. Agricultural land at Napan was reported as being covered with silt and mud. At Black River, two bridges were washed out. In Chatham, a brook overflowed its banks between Duke and Water streets. The water was running out the alley between the Hoffman and A.J. Loggie stores, across Water Street, and into the post office extension lot.
Heavy rain accompanied by wind.
It was reported that 1.8 inches [46 mm] of rain had fallen by 8 p.m., July 8. An east wind was blowing, with gusts of 40 to 50 miles [64 to 80 km] per hour.
The damages in Northumberland County were reported to be in excess of $500 000 of which $200 000 was reported to be the cost of lost logs.
