Affected Areas

Lower Saint John Area: Hundreds of acres of land were inundated along Rothesay Road. Cellars in the district were flooded and portions of highways submerged. An ice jam occurred at the mouth of Marsh Creek creating the majority of the problem. The schoolhouse at Glen Falls was completely surrounded by water. Oromocto River Basin: Ice cakes from swollen streams between Hoyt and Fredericton Junction resulted in broken telephone lines. Telephone service was also disrupted between Woodstock and Newcastle and to Montreal. Men were working from boats to repair the damage. Sackville Area: In the Sackville area, the marshes resembled lakes and many business premises were reported to be flooded. The water was reported to be up to the office windows of the Super Service Station on Lorne Street. Main Street was inundated to a depth of one to two feet [0.3 m to 0.6 m], from the rink to the Cole Block. At Frosty Hollow, the highway was inundated to a depth of more than three feet [0.9 m].
Two days of snow, sleet and rain. The rainfall totaled about five inches [125 mm] at Saint John. Some ice jams were created by the record breaking thaw.
Saint John Area: The water in Marsh Creek was said to have risen gradually without the destruction of usual floods. Spruce Lake was said to have reached its highest recorded level. Sackville Area: At Sackville, the flood was described as "the worst freshet experienced for many years".
Sackville Area: Goods were damaged in the basements of several Sackville businesses. The Super Service Station reported losses to be in the order of $185.
