Heavy rain

Affected Areas

Campbellton Area: Some 96.8 mm of rain fell over approximately four hours in the Val D'Amour area of northern New Brunswick, close to Campbellton, which caused Walker Brook to overflow or erode its banks in some locations. The resulting torrent moved the structures of at least four "personal bridges" that crossed the brook, and overloaded the drainage system in the area. In some locations large rocks, mud, and woody debris were left behind by the receding flood waters. About. 60 homes were damaged when basements were flooded up to one metre deep. Erables Road was shut down for a period of time, and other local roads were damaged by the high water.
At the nearby Charlo airport, the rainfall broke the previous record set in 1979 when 60.4 mm fell in 6 hours. In 1980, 96.9 mm of rain fell in 24 hours.
EMO officials estimated that it would take a period of about three months to restore the damages in the community to pre-flood conditions.
