Affected Areas

General: The low-lying, eastern sections of Saint John were hardest hit by the heavy rains, but flooding also occurred in south and west Saint John, Grand Bay, Hampton, Gondola Point, and Sussex. High tides compounded the flooding problems in some areas. Saint John Area: Within Saint John, portions of Rothesay Avenue and McAllister Drive were flooded. Some streets in Glen Falls were closed due to flooding, such as Holland Street, which was under approximately 0.3 metres of water, making it impassible for motorists. Some 50 basements were flooded, mostly on St. James Street, Rothesay Avenue, and McLaren Boulevard. About 30 metres of the road shoulder of McLaren Boulevard, near Sandy Point Road, was washed out. In Grand Bay, some flooding occurred in a subdivision. Sussex Area: In the Sussex area, the main railway line was severely flooded causing trains to proceed very slowly over a distance of several kilometres.
A total of 111.2 mm of rain fell, far surpassing the previous one-day record of 67 mm set in 1984. Two residents of Glen Falls gave varying estimates of the flood¿s severity. One described it as "the worst flooding in twelve years", but another described it as "the worst in three years".
