Affected Areas


Coastal flooding was reported to have occurred in some areas of the Province. Saint John Area: In Saint John, flooded streets and basements resulted from the storm. Three streets were closed to traffic because of the flooding and firemen were called to about 40 homes to pump basements. The Kierstead Trailer Park was turned into one large pool (photo published*). Sussex Area: In the Sussex area, the low-lying areas were inundated and numerous basements were flooded. Moncton Area: Minor flooding was reported in the Moncton area mainly due to blocked culverts and manholes. In Dieppe, the Fox Creek bridge was submerged for three days and some flooding occurred in the Dover Road area. The Rendezvous Beverage Room situated near the bridge was almost flooded when the high water came within a foot [0.3 m] of the building. The beverage room was closed for a period of time. In the Breau Creek area, on the outskirts of Dorchester, Highway #6 was closed when several hundred feet of road was inundated. Fields in the area were also inundated. Sackville Area: At Sackville, three feet [0.9 m] of water inundated the main floor of the Enheat Fawcett foundry on January 8. Employees were given time off until the afternoon of the 9th when most of the water had drained away. Chatham Area: Minor flooding was reported in the Chatham area due to blocked drainage systems.
Saint John Area: The storm was reported to have dumped 80 millimetres of rain on Saint John. Sussex Area: At Sussex, 106.7 millimetres of rain were reported for the first eight days of 1979. This was the second floor event in the Sussex area during the past week. Moncton Area: A rainfall of 69.8 millimetres was reported to have fallen at Moncton. Chatham Area: It was reported that Chatham received 35 centimetres of snow, the highest snowfall in the Province.
