Affected Areas


Moncton Area: Heavy rains brought flooded basements and road washouts to the Moncton area. The reports estimate that between 300 and 500 houses were affected. The reports also indicate that the hardest hit area were McKay Street, south end of Elmwood Drive and the McAllister Avenue area of Riverview. The highway garage in Humphrey reported a washout, which severed the Salisbury Road about eight miles [approx. 13km] from the causeway traffic circle. The Coverdale highway garage reported "seven or eight" washouts. In northern New Brunswick, heavy rains were reported, but no major flooding problems occurred.
The flood was reported to be the second such event in the past month. The Moncton Airport Weather Office reported "1.64 inches of rains between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 5, bringing the total rainfall for the last five days to 5.24 inches." The water was reported to be "waist high on both sides of McKay and on the southern Elmwood Drive convent property."
The flood damage was reported as "extensive to furniture, carpeting, furnaces, etc. and unknown structural damages probably have occurred." The Salisbury Road washout was described as being over 20 feet [6.1m] wide.
