Heavy rainfall flooded several streets in Saint John on Friday, September 11th. The area received 107.4 millimeters of rain – more than an average month’s worth over a period of 24 hours. Heavy flooding in the East Point retail district of the city closed McAllister Drive between Westmorland Road and Rothesay Avenue. Barriers were put up on Retail Drive, closing it from Rothesay Avenue to Oakland Street. Portions of Rothesay Avenue were also covered in water. One lane of Haymarket Street was closed to traffic, and in the north, Ropewalk Road was also closed. All streets were open again by the evening.

The RCMP suspect the heavy rain contributed to an accident on Highway 1 in the Rothesay area at about 8 a.m. when a transport truck rear-ended a vehicle near the Campbell Drive exit. No one was injured. Another multi-vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer and two other vehicles occurred on Highway 1 near the Dolan Road Irving filling station shortly after 6 p.m. There were reports of flooded basements on Montreal Avenue and elsewhere in Saint John.
