Affected Areas

Tropical Storm Irene hit New Brunswick on August 28th, bringing high winds and rain to much of the province. In Saint John, officials closed access to Saints Rest and McLaren beaches and parts of Red Head Road on the city’s eastern side, where waves crashed dangerously close to the road. In Oromocto, flash flooding left nearly 50 basements flooded, as well as some streets and sidewalks. Most homes that were flooded dealt with only one or two inches of water in their basements, but a few homes suffered more severe flooding. Fire crews were on hand to help pump out basements and remove flooded materials while the public works crews tried to keep catch basins free of debris. All the cable ferries in the province were down except the Westfield and Deer Island ferries. The ferry to Grand Manan also stopped running during the height of the storm. The storm left over 50,000 NB Power customers without power. Many trees were uprooted, falling on power lines, houses, and vehicles.
