Affected Areas

Several areas in southern New Brunswick were hit with heavy rain on December 9th and 10th. The Town of Sussex and the Village of Sussex Corner battled high floodwaters from nearby Trout Creek, leading to the town having to activate its emergency measures monitoring level 3, which is the highest the town has. Within town limits, places like Main Street, Holman Avenue and its immediate surrounding areas were affected by water. In Sussex Corner, Meadow Crescent and Sullivan Park were affected. In Saint John, Glen Road at Simpson Drive to Brown Street, the section between Tim Street and Golden Grove Road, Ashburn Lake Road between Foster Thurston and Rothesay Road and Todd Street between Simpson Drive and Rayland Street were closed on the 10th. Along Route 114, a handful of power lines and dozens of trees and bushes lining Shepody Bay were submerged in two to three feet of murky water. Around noon on the 10th, part of the southern edge of Albert Mines Road, near Lower Cape, was closed due to a clogged culvert. There was no apparent structural damage, but water could be seen overflowing from one side of the road to the other.
Environment Canada rainfall totals for December 9th and 10th: Saint John: 74.5 mm Sussex Four Corners: 44.2 mm Fredericton: 40.6 mm Point Lepreau: 37.4 mm Doaktown: 30.9 mm Moncton: 25.5 mm
Near Hillsborough, a culvert collapsed on a road connecting Hopewell Cape with Route 114. The washout took with it a large chunk of roadway and partly flooded a neighbouring farm. A washout also temporarily closed the West River bridge.
