A thunderstorm on June 5th brought heavy winds, rain, and hail to Fredericton and parts of York County. Several streets in downtown Fredericton, including parts of Dundonald, Northumberland, and York, were flooded for a period during the height of the storm. An automatic weather station in the area showed wind gusts as high as 90 kilometers per hour.
Environment Canada precipitation totals for June 5th: Fredericton: 21.1 mm Total rainfall occurred within the span of one hour.
Downed trees across power lines and broken power poles left 13,000 customers without power throughout the region. About 3,700 customers in the Fredericton region were left in the dark. The Canadian Red Cross helped six tenants that were displaced from their four-unit apartment on George Street when a tree fell on nearby power lines, causing a fire. A spokesperson for the City of Fredericton said about 50 trees were toppled in the storm.
