Affected Areas

Heavy rain and frozen ground led to flooding in several areas of the province on December 21st and 22nd. An ice jam on the Tobique River led to two people being evacuated from their home in Riley Brook on the 23rd after it became surrounded by floodwaters. Water levels on the Tobique were 0.34 meters above flood stage at the time. Sussex’s Emergency Measures Organization was activated on the morning of the 22nd following a significant rise in river levels. An advisory was sent to alert residents of Sussex and surrounding areas of high water levels and the risk of flooding. The advisory was downgraded days later and no damages or flooding were reported. The Magaguadavic, Petitcodiac, Upsalquitch and Nashwaak rivers were closely monitored over the course of the rainfall event, however the Nashwaak was the only one to reach flood stage, at 21.2 meters.
