Affected Areas

Three days of mild weather resulted in floods throughout Kings and Northumberland counties. Kennebecasis River Basin: In Sussex, numerous basements were inundated and the road at Sussex Corner was submerged, inconveniencing traffic. In the vicinity of the residence of Judge Jonah's, a sidewalk bridge was washed out. The meadows between Sussex and Apohaqui were inundated. At Apohaqui, the water level was very high but the houses had flooded cellars only. The Millstream road was reported to be under water and some logs in that area were carried away. On April 10, the ice broke up in the vicinity of Sussex and jammed at Norton. The water then came up over the road, inundating houses and shops, and reaching a depth of some two feet [0.6 m] in several cases. Some of the buildings that were reported to have been affected were: E.L. Harmer Ltd.'s store, the post office, the drug store and the Provincial Bank. The jam broke later in the day and the water receded quickly. The meadows between Norton and Bloomfield were also inundated, including the bridge approaches at Bloomfield. Nashwaak River Basin: A section of the C.N.R. railway line was washed out on April 9, near Taymouth, by runoff from melting snow. Miramichi River Basin: At Newcastle, the storm sewers were unable to cope with the excess runoff and several basements were reported to be flooded in the Pleasant Street area.
Snowmelt and ice jams.
The freshet was described as "the highest in years, but scarcely so bad as expected, owing to the quantity of snow".
No estimates of the flood damage were presented.
