Affected Areas


In Kings County and the Province in general, considerable damage was caused to roads and bridges as a result of the heavy runoff. Sussex Area: In the vicinity of Sussex, all the lowlands were inundated and many cellars were filled with water. At Waterford, the Carr Bridge on Creek Road was almost washed away, and a retaining wall above the bridge (built three years previously) was damaged considerably. The approach to the Madden Bridge, further up Trout Creek, was washed out. Two 12-feet [approx. 3.7 m] spans on the McNutt Flat were washed out and immediate repair was required. In the Parish of Havelock, the Freeze concrete culvert and roadway embankment were badly damaged. The report stated that "7 000 loads of new fill had recently been placed there". In the Parish of Studholm, the Schofield Road between Millstream and Pleasant Ridge was reported to be "so badly washed as to render it impassable".

The flood was described as "high conditions were generally worse than can be remembered at this time of year, the water rising to such a height as rivalled the highest spring freshets in memory".
"Reports from various parts of the Province indicate that the storm was general and undoubtedly caused damage running into many thousands of dollars."
